Chanting the Mantra of Light: A Path to Transformation, Purification, and Enlightenment

Updated: Sep 30, 2023

Om amogha vairocana mahamudra mani padma jvala pravarttaya hum.

Praise to the unfailing, all-pervasive illumination of the great mudra, the jewel, the Lotus,

and the radiant light turning.

I stumbled across the Mantra of Light – known as Vairocana in Sanskrit or Komyo Shingon in Japanese – quite unexpectedly, while browsing for images of the Japanese Kanji characters for Reiki. Some time ago, I took an amateur interest in Japanese calligraphy, which I had turned into something like an artsy hobby. As I browsed through various resources, images and articles online, I accidentally came across a piece by Frans Stiene and Bronwen Stiene – “The Great Bright Light” – discussing the origins of the Reiki Master symbol: Dai Ko Myo. I found this article fascinating and continued to research materials that would discuss in greater depth the benefits and uses of the Mantra of Light. I also started chanting it daily and, in hind sight, I could tell that it had a profound, transformational effect on my life.

One of the ways the mantra had assisted me in my spiritual growth was to aid in connecting with the “other side” – beyond the veil – where one could “meet” and communicate with loved ones, who have passed. Based on my research, I discovered that one could chant the mantra 108 times for someone, who has crossed over, in order to assist the soul in its path beyond the realm of the physical. While this is typically done on the day of the funeral, or shortly thereafter, I thought that it would be applicable outside of time. My thoughts traveled back to my teenage years, when my maternal grandmother passed away. She had, and still has, strong influence on my spiritual growth. Thus, without hesitation, I chanted the Mantra of Light 108 times, holding her in my thoughts.

Following this experience, I embarked on an accelerated path of spiritual growth, which gave me much needed direction and led me to discovering more of my healing abilities. Most importantly, though, a year after I had completed this ritual, I received a sign of my grandmother through a medium. I was looking for some answers and guidance on how to proceed with my metaphysical work, when I signed up for a group reading with a medium. He was able to connect with my grandmother’s soul, and there was an unmistakable sign – she appeared as “Mother Mary” (for reference, her name was Maria).

It has been some time now, since these two experiences and I feel very blessed that my interest in Reiki and Japanese Kanji characters had led me to “discover” the Mantra of Light, which has, in turn, had transformed my life, beyond anything I could have ever imagined.

Thank you to the Spirit Guides, who led me on this path and who continue to help me serve the Light through offering much needed guidance and advice!

If you wish to incorporate the Mantra of Light into your daily practice, you may set aside a few minutes every day and chant the mantra 21 times. To enhance its effect, you may focus on an area of your body, or an aspect of your life, which may need healing at this time. While chanting (or reciting, if it is easier) hold the image of the mantra wheel with the seed syllable A at the center in your mind, or simply look at it.
